Immigration and Trump: What’s coming next? What you can do to protect your loved ones

President Trump’s actions on immigration have alarmed the country and the world. With immigration reform looming on the horizon, now is the time to secure your rights and apply for citizenship—before it’s too late.

In Trump’s first week of office, he acted on multiple anti-immigrant policies. First, he promised to make good on his proposal to build a wall along the Mexican border. Next, he attempted to restrict immigration from seven Muslim countries and suspended all refugee admissions for 120 days. His attempt to deny admission of Syrian refugees was suspended indefinitely. There have been several accounts of travelers, including permanent residents, detained unjustly.

Trump fired the acting attorney general, Sally Q. Yates after she refused to defend these possibly unlawful executive orders. Set to replace her is Jeff Sessions, one of Trump’s most trusted advisor and notorious opponent of both legal and unauthorized of immigration.

Beyond all this, Trump’s campaign platform promised comprehensive immigration reform, which may pass quickly through a majority Republican Congress. Immigration, in general, may be limited and merit or skill-based immigration would be favored over family-based. This system would differ severely from the current one. Currently, two-thirds of green cards are allocated to family members of US green card holders and citizens.

Now is the time to for permanent residents to become US citizens. Current US citizens and permanent residents should petition for their relatives to come to the US before immigration reform is implemented. If Trump’s immigration reform passes, eligibility requirements for green cards, and possibly citizenship, could change. The opportunity to become a citizen or to bring a family to the US may be lost to certain individuals.
