Understanding Form G-1145

Introduction

You’ve submitted your immigration application to USCIS, and now all you can do is wait. You find yourself checking the mailbox every day, wondering if it was even received.

Would it not be great if you could get a quick email or text confirming that your application is in the system?

Well, that is precisely what Form G-1145 is. This is an optional way to be notified as soon as USCIS receives and accepts your application package for processing. As mentioned, it’s not a requirement, but it does help ease that anxious waiting period by letting you know your paperwork has safely landed at USCIS.

What is Form G-1145?

Form G-1145, also known as the e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance, is an optional form that can be submitted by the applicants with their immigration petition, enabling them to receive a text or an email confirming the acceptance of their immigration application at USCIS instead of waiting for it in the mailbox.

Form G-1145 is free to download from the USCIS website and does not charge an extra fee. It is super short, just two lines on a single page, and it lets USCIS know you’d like an electronic notification.

When Should You File Form G-1145?

Filing Form G-1145 is a good idea when you are submitting an immigration application that is sent to a USCIS Lockbox. This includes most family-based immigration applications, such as marriage green card applications, and others mentioned below:

  1. Form I-90 (Application to replace permanent resident card)
  2. Form I-130 (Petition for alien relatives)
  3. Form I-485 (Application for adjustment of status
  4. Form I-765: (Employment authorization)
  5. Form N-400: (Application for naturalization to become a U.S. citizen)

While G-1145 is helpful, it’s not meant for every application. You should not file Form G-1145 if your paperwork is sent directly to a USCIS field office or service center.

Why Is Form G-1145 Useful?

Form G-1145 is helpful because:

  1. You’ll know right away when USCIS receives your paperwork.
  2. It’s 100% free and doesn’t affect your application’s USCIS processing time.
  3. It is helpful for those who travel frequently and may not be present at home when USCIS sends confirmation.

However, you must understand that if you do not file Form G-1145, it will not hamper your application because it is optional. You will still receive updates, but they will be via regular mail. Once the application is accepted, you can check the status online through the USCIS Website.

How Should I File Form G-1145?

Filling out Form G-1145 is one of the easiest parts of your immigration paperwork. Below are the steps mentioned:

  1. Download the Form: Visit the official USCIS website to download the latest version of Form G-1145. Always make sure that you are using the most updated version.
