Contacting USCIS: Procedures

Introduction

Do you have an immigration query or question about your USCIS processing time or case status? It might be a good idea to contact USCIS to resolve your queries. If you are confused about how to contact USCIS and the best route or method for your case, this guide will answer all your questions.

What are the 4 Simple and Easy Ways to Contact the USCIS?

Over the past decade, the USCIS has implemented multiple online tools and methods to reduce the heavy workload on its contact center staff. Here are the best ways in which you can contact the USCIS:

USCIS Online Tools

The best way to get a quick answer to your question is to use the online tools available 24/7. The USCIS has FAQ sections on almost all immigration forms and benefits. Just type the name of your form along with “FAQ USCIS” on your browser, and you will readily get an answer.

Additionally, you can also take advantage of the e-Request online tool. All you need is your form receipt number, form number, and the date you filed the form.

Online Virtual Assistant

In 2015, the USCIS launched EMMA, its virtual assistant, to increase self-help tools. EMMA can answer questions in both English and Spanish. If EMMA cannot answer your questions, you can also ask her to connect you with a live agent for a chat and even help schedule an in-person appointment at the USCIS office. You can even talk to EMMA using the sound option.

Email and Automated Help

Sometimes, the USCIS designates email addresses for case-specific inquiries about pending or already decided/adjudicated applications. You can also get answers to your general questions by dialing 800-375-5283 (TTY: 800-767-1833) at any time during the day and using the speech-enabled phone system.

Calling the Contact Center

While reserved as the last option, if the above procedures cannot resolve your queries, you can call the USCIS contact centre. However, live calls and chats are only available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

  • Calling from within the US: Dial the toll-free number 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833).
  • Calling from outside the US: Dial 212-620-3418.

After calling, first you would have to answer a set of questions using their “interactive voice response” (IVR) system. If there is a high call volume, you may experience a wait time. On Mondays, the USCIS has the highest call volume, so it’s best to call sometime during the middle of the week.

Conclusion

Understanding the procedures to contact the USCIS can prevent delays in your application process and resolve your doubts about the visa process. Using self-help tools is better if you want to get answers to your queries anytime during the day or the week. If your query is still unresolved after using self-help tools and attending a live call, you should consult an expert immigration lawyer
