Checking US Citizenship Application Status

Introduction

In the fiscal year 2024, the USCIS received around 17,934 N-400 applications

Every year, the USCIS receives millions of applications for asylum, permanent residence, and naturalization. Due to the backlog of the processing centers, your application may be delayed. The wait time for your naturalization application depends on the complexity of your application and the backlog of the field office processing it.

According to the recent USCIS case processing time for N-400, you can expect to wait anywhere between 6 and 18 months, depending on the location of the field office and your residential address.

After filing, it’s up to you to follow up with the USCIS and track the progress of your naturalization application. So, how can you do that? There are four ways of tracking the progress of your naturalization application, N-400, after filing it with the USCIS, which will all be discussed in detail in this blog. Let’s get started!

What Are The Ways To Check a US Citizenship Application Status?

If you want to check the case status of your naturalization application in 2025, you can use any of these four methods:

  • Online
  • By mail
  • By phone
  • In-person

How Can You Check the Status of Your US Citizenship Application Online?

This is by far the easiest way to check your case status. There are two ways of checking.

USCIS case status online tracker

  • Step 1: Visit the website of the USCIS and search for Case Status Online
  • Step 2: Enter the unique 13-character receipt number, which consists of 3 letters and 10 digits. You can find your receipt number in the notice that you got from the USCIS after submitting your N-400, which said that your application has been accepted.
  •  Step 3: Click “Check Status”.

MyUSCIS

  • Step 1: Create or log in to your individual USCIS account. Remember to update your email ID in case you end up changing it after making an account, as all USCIS email communication will be sent here.
  • Step 2: Choose your N-400 application from the dropdown menu
  • Step 3: Check the latest status of your case, as well as processing time and copies of any notices or letters sent

How Can You Check Your US Citizenship Application Status By Mail?

The USCIS sends all the updates on your cases, whether it be a notice or a letter, to the physical mailing address you mentioned on your N-400 application. If, after filing an N-400 application, you have moved to a new address, you can go to your MyUSCIS account, log in, and update your mailing address and other contact information

While you cannot directly check the status of your citizenship application by mail, you can get all the USCIS updates delivered to your mailing address. If you initially filed your citizenship application by mail, then you can create a MyUSCIS account. If you don’t have one, check the status using the dropdown menu.

How Can You Check Your US Citizenship Application Status By Phone?

You can also check the status of your citizenship application by calling the USCIS Contact Center.

Usually, you may have to hold the call for some time, considering that the USCIS’s toll-free number is very busy, with thousands of immigrants and non-immigrants calling the number.

If you want to check the status of your citizenship application, you can call the USCIS Contact Center toll-free at 1-800-375-5283. If you have a speech disability, such as being deaf or hard of hearing, you can also call TTY at 1-800-767-1833.

Remember to call the USCIS contact center only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern. You cannot talk to a live call center representative on the weekends, i.e., Saturdays and Sundays.

What Information Should You Keep With You?

When calling the USCIS contact center, keep the following information handy:

Can you call from Outside The US?

Though it is advised that you do not travel outside the US for prolonged stays while your citizenship application is still pending, in case you do end up traveling abroad, you can call 212-620-3418 to get to know the status of your N-400.

How Can You Check Your US Citizenship Application Status In Person?

To check the status of your N-400 in person, you can request an appointment online or call the USCIS contact center at 1-800-375-5283 (or TTY 1-800-767-1833).

You cannot visit the USCIS office without an appointment. You can get an appointment only when the service you have requested cannot be provided by phone, mail, or email, or if you require emergency service.

Conclusion

Periodically following up with the USCIS about the status of your citizenship application helps you reduce the processing time and become a U.S. citizen faster. If there are any notices or requests for additional evidence, then it’s advised that you reply to them promptly and attach all information and documents that are needed by the USCIS to process your N-400.

You can track the progress of your application by checking online, by phone, by mail, or by making an appointment and physically visiting the contact center.
